Acrobatic Dance

Acrobatic Dance and Circus Style Acrobatics are a unique twist on the usual styles of dance. Acrobatic Dance is both an athletic sport and a performing art that offers a dazzling array of unique skills and tricks to the audience. The most visible display of Acrobatics can currently be seen in the world-famous Cirque du Soleil.  Our recreational programs are a perfect spot for students to learn the fundamentals of Acrobatic Dance. Students work on their flexibility and strength before attempting their tricks with experienced, qualified spotters and instructors.

Stunting

Stunting consists of one person acting as a flier and another as a porter. The porter remains in contact with the floor and the flier is balanced in the air. The porter may move between a variety of positions, including lying on the floor, crouching, standing, and kneeling. The flier may be balanced on the base’s feet, hands, shoulders, knees, thighs, back, or combinations of these in a variety of positions and orientations, including horizontal, vertical, or even upside down. These classes are fun, energetic, and rewarding all at the same time!

Tumbling

Tumbling combines strength, power, agility, and coordination that can captivate audiences and bring them to the edge of their seats. Tricks such as somersaults, handsprings, aerials, round-offs, dive rolls, and more are performed without the use of specialized apparatus. Students can enjoy a safe atmosphere as they learn their technique on our Tumble Track and then move to the floor once they master their skills.

Contortion

Our Contortion classes are designed for “extra bendy” individuals; upon entering our Contortion class, students have already nurtured their individual flexibility and will continue to enhance the beauty of bending. Participants will study contortion techniques and will focus on developing more strength and flexibility to support their tricks/skills. This class is by invitation or audition only.

Aerial Acrobatics

KaliAndrews Dance Company provides the opportunity for participants to explore their artistic acrobatic skills in the air! Offering multiple choices of aerial apparatus for our students to discover, explore, grow, and challenge themselves within each lesson.  Aerial acrobatics has become well-known in the circus performance community and is continuing to grow in popularity. This form of acrobatics is highly challenging in addition to being rewarding at the same time and is commonly seen in the world-famous Cirque du Soleil.

Ballet

Ballet dance classes focus on the principles and steps on which almost all dance styles were founded. With a solid ballet foundation, dancers can transfer their skills into other dance forms to enhance their versatility. While all styles of dance tend to compliment one another, Ballet technique is the foundation for many other dance styles and is a highly recommended addition to any dancers course load.

Pointe

Pointe class begins at the Grade 6 Level at KADC, and dancers may be required to complete an assessment before entering.

Pointe classes include beginner pointe techniques focusing on building the fundamentals and strength of pointe work at the barre and progressing into the centre with more challenging steps. Our Intermediate to Advanced Pointe class includes advanced pointe techniques focusing on the development of pointe work through more challenging steps at the barre and in the centre.

Technique

Technique classes are designed to enhance ballet technique with a primary focus on mastering and fully comprehending technical dance elements without choreography. Dancers will build muscle memory and fine tune their skills for easy execution with technical ballet skills.

This is not a performance-based class; therefore, the participants have the opportunity to continue their training for the full duration of each term.

CONTEMPORARY

KaliAndrews Dance Company is well known in the industry for their Contemporary Dance Programs. Click ‘Full Screen’ on video to expand.

Contemporary / Modern

Our Contemporary/Modern Dance Classes are a fusion of contemporary, modern, jazz, and ballet techniques. In terms of the focus of its technique, contemporary dance tends to combine the strong and controlled legwork of ballet with modern dance’s stress on the torso, and also employs contract-release, floor work, fall and recovery, and improvisation characteristic of modern dance. This type of dance challenges choreographers and dancers to use motion as an artistic form of expression.

KADC is one of the top schools in Ottawa for Contemporary, winning multiple choreography, costume, and overall awards across several regional and national competitions.

JAZZ

KADC's Jazz Programs are fun, energetic and adventurous! Check out our dancers in this video.

Jazz

Jazz is energetic and fun, showcasing exaggerated movements, fancy footwork, big leaps, and fast turns with an attitude that the dancer conveys to the audience. This style of dance is faster than ballet, which most students find more enjoyable and easier to follow. However, to excel in Jazz, dancers need a strong background in ballet. Dancers focus on jazz techniques, isolations, and lyrical movements throughout their classes at KADC.

Jumps & Turns

Jumps & Turns classes are designed to enhance Jazz techniques with a primary focus on mastering jumping and turning elements without choreography. Dancers will build muscle memory and fine-tune their skills for easy execution with these skills.

This is not a performance-based class; therefore, the participants have the opportunity to continue their training for the full duration of the season.

TAP

Tap Dance is an exciting form of dance in which dancers wear special shoes equipped with metal taps. Tap dancers use their feet like drums to create rhythmic patterns and timely beats. The term “tap dancing” is derived from the tapping sound produced when the small metal plates on the dancer’s shoes touch a hard floor or surface.

Tap Dance classes at KADC focus on fundamental tap technique to enhance rhythm, motor skills, musicality and coordination. Students are introduced to tap through the BATD syllabus and progress to open work at the advanced levels.
